There’s a growing distasteful practice of Twitter and Facebook spamming that I want to address.
Many of these people have the mistaken belief that if they have more followers…they will gain more influence. So, in order to get more followers, they will follow more people with the hopes that people will follow them back.
Once these people have a few thousand followers, they think they now have a ready audience to send forth their spam (aka unsolicited marketing messages) with the hopes that *some* of their followers actually care about what they have to say.
What they don’t realize is that the people who follow them also follow thousands of people too…and don’t read their tweets either.
This is just pure madness.
The other thing I’ve noticed these people do is to spam me using my @georgetran tag…hoping that if it is marked to my attention..I would ACTUALLY read it…these people are as low as the regular email spammers who are despised as pariahs of the online community.
What does work is building relationships online, one relationship at a time. When I mean building relationships…I mean responding and listening to your followers and having conversations with them….and ENGAGE them. Find out what their needs are..and helping them. Direct them to resources that can help them….and here’s the kicker…their friends will see you as a helpful person…and want to have relationships with you too.
If you are a twitter spammer with thousands of followers…please stop. No one likes to be spammed and treated as a number. If you are someone who is being spammed…forward this link to the spammer. Perhaps it may help them see the errors of their ways.
Sincerely
George Tran
